Second, is there anywhere I could get the real beef on how to temper a sword? Most sources I've found online simply describe the process in general without telling you how to do it. I'm looking for info on how to do it by forge and by oven, I guess.

(you have rarely diamond stone to sharpen a knife when you are outside the home). For a small blade i would prefer a tempering around 220°c (458°c if google is right).
